Thoughts on a classic video game: Donkey Kong Country 2

Yesterday, I took a stroll down memory lane and decided to play Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest. I could remember playing this game as a youth and feeling excitement as well as frustration (due to the extreme difficulty). Now, being an adult, I found that not much has changed. I was still excited to see Diddy, the end of the level win animations, all the goofy Kong family characters and yes, the difficulty that made me want to tear my hair out. But alas, I rediscovered how fun this gam… Continue

Beatles Rock Band: review

When talking about the Beatles a few words come to mind: amazing, gifted and legendary to state just a few, so it was only a matter of time before they became part of the video game world. In Beatles Rock Band, you along with 3 other friends get to navigate through the career of the Beatles from playing in small venues to belting out some of the most significant tunes of all time. And how does the game add up you ask? It is truly a remarkable video game that follows the career of a remarkable ba… Continue

A look at console controllers: Nintendo (part 1)

Ok, so it would take me a while to list all of Nintendo's controllers, so I'm splitting it up into 2 parts. Today I will cover the Nintendo Entertainment System controller and the SNES controller. Next, I'll cover the N64, the Gamecube and finally the Wii. So here we go. The Nintendo Entertainment System controller. A legend in its own right and truly a landmark in gaming history. The controller brought us the power to take control of some of the best characters around like Mario or Link. But I… Continue

A look at console game controllers: Microsoft

Ok, I know Microsoft hasn't been in the game very long, but they've done an awful lot in the time that they've been out. They've sold millions of consoles as well as games, come up with some innovative technology and proved that they could outsell Sony's PS3 (for the time being). So, lets just check out the controllers that Microsoft has to offer and see how they fair against the others. First off; the original fat Xbox controller. Now I love the original Xbox for many reasons; it had a hard dr… Continue

A thought about best gaming controllers

What makes a good controller? Is it the innovations that come along with it, or is it the simplicity? I, for one, cannot decide on the true nature of a "good video game controller". There are dozens of controllers from dozens of systems, some bad and others good. I can say that I do have a preference for a certain type of controller over others, and some of that might have to do with comfort and add-ons. What I can do, for now, is talk about all of the major console brand controllers I've ever u… Continue

Thoughts on XBox Live update

The Avatar for the Xbox 360, its cute, cuddly and now, if properly dressed, will be expensive. Microsoft recently released an update for the Avatar characters that were initially free to clothe, and now they're charging for clothes such as ODST armor (from the Halo: ODST game), popcorn, and a Lightsaber (from Star Wars) to make sure that your avatar won't feel like an outcast that shops at cheap stores. I initially liked the idea of avatars, they're a nice way to create a video game version of o… Continue

Batman Arkham Asylum: demo thoughts

The Batman Arkham Asylum demo was released this week (the 6th for PS3 and the 7th for Xbox 360) and I am pleased with what I've played so far. Albeit, I do have some minor nitpicks about the game, it is only a demo and I'll have to wait for the complete game for a complete judgment call and review. What I did like about the game: the stealth. My goodness, I had so much fun using Batman's grapple hook make speedy swings from ledges to gargoyles. The stealth system even employs a heart-rate meter… Continue

Van Halen Guitar Hero soundtrack

80's metal...it was all about great guitar licks and impressing girls. Clearly, Van Halen was one of the most memorable bands of the 80's, so its only fitting to give them their own video game to celebrate their years of rocking the free world. Activision has recently released the setlist for the upcoming Guitar Hero: Van Halen video game. The songs by the band include: * "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" * "And The Cradle Will Rock" * "Atomic Punk" * "Beautiful Girls" * "Cathedral" (solo) * "Dance The… Continue

Unsung villain: Ganondorf

This blog post is about the many exploits of the Gerudo king of thieves Ganondorf from the Legend of Zelda video games. Ganondorf is as evil as evil can get in games, from his first appearance onward, he has managed to continually make the inhabitants of Hyrule live in constant fear of attack. Ganondorf, for lack of a better phrase, is villainous. Born as the only male in the race of Gerudo women thieves, Ganondorf was crowned king of the Gerudo people and had to endure an endless struggle of li… Continue

PS3 costs go down

Reports are being made that the initial manufacturing costs of the Playstation 3 have gone down by 70 percent since its original release. Sony Corporation's CEO and Vice President Nobuyuki Oneda said that the cost cut is "substantial" and "about 70 percent, roughly speaking." This is good news for Sony, since it is currently in third place of the console wars, first place belonging to Nintendo's Wii and the Xbox 360 by Microsoft is in second, this could potentially bring Sony's profit margin up… Continue

Xbox avatars on Guitar Hero 5

Ok, when I heard that the Wii would support the integration of personal Miis to be a playable character in Guitar Hero 5 Wii: I was mildly interested. Probably because my Wii doesn't have the graphical power of my Xbox 360. However, it has just been reported that the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero 5 will allow players to use their avatar characters as members in your band. A very cool concept, since its almost everyone's dream to become a rock star- this can help gamers live vicariously through… Continue

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Turtles in Time re-shelled: price drop!

Ok, I'm not going to type out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-shelled every time in this blog, so I'm going to give it the longest abbreviation ever: TMNT:TiTR-S. With that out of the way, TMNT: TiTR-S on the Xbox live marketplace has just had its priced changed $10! While the original is available for $5, this updated version will be slightly higher, and most likely worth every cent of its price tag. TMNT: TiTR-S looks to be great multi-player fun, just like the original, and a… Continue

Dead Space becomes a trilogy

Fans of the survival game Dead Space should be pleased to hear that EA has ordered two sequels for the series. The first game had Issac Clarke exploring the mining ship the Ishimura to find the whereabouts of his girlfriend as well as a way to get out. Dead Space sequels are great news to hear, since the game had the atmosphere of Riddley Scott's Alien movie, while also having a unique set of enemies as well as weapons to fight them with. The cinematics were extremely enjoyable to watch, especia… Continue

Raimi to direct Warcraft movie

Sam Raimi (Evil Dead and Spiderman movies) has been appointed as the director of a movie based on the video game series Warcraft. Now if I've learned anything through the years of watching movies: then I believe in Sam Raimi and look forward to any movie he has in development. However, if I've learned anything else through my years of watching video game based movies: this won't be good at all. I'm having mixed feelings about this project, partially because its a video game movie and also since… Continue

Lego Indiana Jones part 2. the adventure continues...in lego form

As sure as night follows day, as sure as "eggs is eggs": Lego video games are always really fun. Lego Star Wars, Batman and recently Indiana Jones were all fun games. Though they were not the most challenging, or most mature games, they were still a great way to play along to the adventures of a Jedi, archeologist or the dark knight.

Metroid Prime Trilogy to be released

I loved Metroid Prime on the Gamecube and I have always thought it was a stand out adventure game in a world dominated by first person shooters and MMORPGs. And I was delighted to find out that Nintendo is planning on Re-releasing Metroid Prime 1, 2, and 3 in a pack this August. The best part? Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 have been done up with Wii graphics as well as having enhanced controls.

Rock band refund

Apparently, EA is taking a financial step back by refunding the $1.99 purchase price for anyone who paid for the track "Still Alive" by GLaDOS from the hilarious and fun video game known as "Portal". I thought this was a bit strange, but it does make EA seem a little less like a mega-conglomerate that just wants our money. No matter, gamers will be given their money back for the song and we can all continue to keep playing Rock Band unhindered. -Ray Continue

A look inside Assassin's Creed 2

Assassin's Creed was supposed to go down as one of the most innovative games ever, with the free roaming environments and foot chases that would incorporate every ledge on a building for an escape route...but it ultimately came up short. While it did sell well with sales and scoring; there were obvious faults of the game (most notably the AI and the repetitive game play along with the major plot point being revealed in the first 10 minutes of the game), but Ubisoft (the creators behind Splinter… Continue

Game recognition: Silent Hill 2 Restless Dreams

When thinking of survival horror games, the Silent Hill franchise was always been at the top of the list. But to be specific Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams is the best game in an outstanding franchise. It was terrifying, atmospheric and hauntingly good. Silent Hill 2 is a standout game amongst a sea of survival horror games.
