Hurray, my second blog here. That is two more posts than i've written on my own blog in the past month. Anyways, I basically want to scope out the hot new releases for the rest of the year and plan out which ones I am going to buy. I also intend on updating this after E3 seeing how some unexpected game will probably make it this year.
Must Buy
-World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (PC)
- Too Human (360)
- Madden 09 (360)
- Little Big Planet (PS3)
- Spore (PC)
- Rock Band 2(36…

Since some of you may not have played (or finished) Metal Gear Solid 4 yet, I'm certainly not going to divulge anything about the storyline here. What I will say is that I had more jaw-dropped, "No freaking way!" moments with this storyline than I have with almost any other game, and I will admit that my eyes moistened slightly in one instance.
I know that there has been and will be talk about the gameplay and how the arguably long cutscenes can affect the pacing of the game, and that's fine. F…

Ok, so i'm not going to really rip this website. There are so many good writers on this website which makes me have to work twice as hard to get noticed. This isn't a real complaint, but it just shows me how far I have to go before I start thinking my career is going in the right direction.

You know I was thinking about marriages in MMOs, and I thought it would be great if some devs would finally develop a marriage system that mirrors our world a little more accurately. Now I’m not saying we need to tarnish the always quaint “and they lived happily ever after” type of ceremony which one finds online more often than not. I’m just saying we add a few little extras to spice the experience up a little bit. Here’s what I came up with:
1. For the solo player, or the player that can’t f…

Robert Welkner of COIN-OP TV guest appeared on ManiaTV for the show ARCADE on its season finale episode. ManiaTV is an internet TV channel with roots that date back as far as 2004. Upon launch it was one of the first live/interactive internet channels out there which helped launch Tom Green Live and Dave Navarro’s Spread TV. ARCADE is one of the few ‘carry over’ shows still attached to the channel since their move from Denver to Los Angeles. ARCADE is hosted by Rob Talbert, a Detroit native who…

COIN-OP TV explores the new uWink restaurant which opens this week in Hollywood, California. This new high tech restaurant promises to be a great social environment and the talk of the town! So how does it stack up upon first impressions? Pretty smooth indeed.
Waiting outside uWink is a cute motion sensor game in which the player moves his or her body around to hit white boxes on the screen and try to avoid red ones. You control a bubbly looking avatar impression of yourself which resembles the…

A few weeks ago Microsoft held a press event in Shibuya, Japan called “Xbox 360 RPG Premiere” in an attempt to once again garner the attention of the Japanese audience. Early leaks of information pointed towards a generic showing of a few Square Enix titles, but the event was much more than anyone expected. Developer after developer walked onto the stage and proclaimed quasi-exclusive relationships with Microsoft and pulled the veil on their latest titles. More importantly, Microsoft finally see…

After the release of Ninja Gaiden 2 I've noticed something apparent that I believe should be shared. Ninja Gaiden overall got above average reviews with the majority of game sites. My question is this. Why? Ninja Gaiden is nothing but eye candy masquerading as a game. A bloody, weapon flurry extravaganza of decapitation, and although pleasing as it is, it is destitute of any qualities that make a great game great. The combat system shouldn't have to carry a game on its shoulders alone. Unless th…

The job of reviewing video games is becoming quite the ethical minefield. With very public instances of publishers pressuring critics to keep quiet and stick to embargo dates there's more and more talk about how game reviewers should behave. Both MTV and Variety have fired bold shots across the hull of video game journalism. Steven Totilo started the conversation by proposing a "Reviewer's Bill of Rights," mo…

I really need a new picture. It looks like I have some sort of cranial growth about to pop open, revealing the mutant twin brother I never knew I had. It also looks like I'm taking a leak, seeing as how that is obviously a shower curtain behind me. I guess this would be a good time to finally use that digital camera I bought last year.

I really can't remember when I started reading Penny Arcade. Somewhere, lost in time, is that magical moment when I discovered the wondrous comedic wit of Jerry Holkins and the stylized artistic flare of Mike Krahulik. Okay, so there's no real scientific study linking aggression to adventure games. There should be. At times I get the gnawing suspicion that, if ever interactive entertainment leads me to commit some heinous, horrible crime, the game to blame won't be GTA. It would more likely be an adventure game with badly designed puzzles.
I'm not talking about the kind of puzzles that make you want to kick yourself after you discover the solution. I'm referring to the type that make you want to kick someone…

Those of you who haven't played Dylan Fitterer's unusual indie title before, be warned: while the strange blend of music, arcade puzzle, and driving seems like nothing more than an amusing diversion today, it could very well be tomorrow's compulsion. I watched King of Kong last night (finally). It made me feel happy, excited, hopeful, and so many other sappy adjectives, in addition to sadness. I had my own slice of arcade fame back in 1994. At 13 years old, I dare say that I was the greatest Primal Rage player in Green Bay, WI. It was the hottest game at the mall, and I was unstoppable. As long as the challengers kept coming, I would sit on that machine for hours after popping in my original quarters. Some of the sore losers accused me of pi…

Thankfully whoever did it didn't make it upstairs, or they would have probably gotten my 360, our good TVs, my good computer, and our DVD collection.

Each generation of consoles has made an advance in gaming unlike any other. For the N64/PS1 generation, it was the jump to 3D; for the Xbox/PS2/GC generation, it was online gameplay and sandbox games. But what about now? Aside from prettier graphics, micro-transactions, and (arguably) motion control, what has defined this generation of consoles? The answer: nothing. Yet. This year, however, that's going to change. 2008 will go down in gaming history as the year of user-created content's rise to…

For a long time I managed to avoid this game. I never understood its allure. Pressing buttons on a toy guitar to match a scrolling display? What's the big deal?
But then, last weekend, I was partying at the home of an old friend and his wife when he loaded it up on his PS2. I watched him play it, then I tried it myself --- and two hours later, I still had the guitar on my shoulder, waiting for an opponent.
Less than 24 hours later, there I was…

Crisis Core - The spin-off we've been waiting for"
When Square-Enix announced the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, many fans were skeptic and fearful that the numerous new titles will only tarnish the reputation of the 1997 masterpiece. For many fans, these fears took on a body with Advent Children, which, while visually stunning, felt a little shallow and lacked the feel of the original game. Then came two other projects: the half-baked Dirge of Cerberus and the untouched, almost unheard-of Be…

In previous columns, we’ve deliberated the nature of storytelling within games and movies and complained about the quality of writing in many movies based on games. In the interview, screenwriter Dalan Musson (writer for The Golden Compass game) described the process of writing a movie-based game, from dealing with mov…

I’ve always been a proponent of recognizing games as an art form, although mediums such as comics, music and film have been whole heartedly embraced as art - video games have been relegated to a past-time that is never to be thought of in the same artistic vein as its beloved audio visual cousins. This is a sad fact that has always puzzled me, after all - isn’t art a form of expression? If so - the video games medium is particularly suited for expressing the views, thoughts and ideas of the crea…

Over the past few years, gaming has grown from a mostly-juvenile form of entertainment and escapism to a legitimate medium of artistic expression.
