When I get those sorts of ideas now, the biggest difficulty is in going out and making contacts. Right now the only person I have is Bill Kunkel. I don't really have anyone else to speak with, which is frustrating because I have two or three ideas...
Critics are journalists. So are courtroom reporters who just take down what happened. But, yes, there is a distinction in the tools, skills and expectations for a critic as compared to investigative, informative, long form journalism.

Isn't VGChartz notoriously unreliable?
Anybody who can afford the subscription can have it. It costs thousands of dollars a year.
Sales figures for all but the top titles are very hard to come by without an NPD subscription. But Gamasutra is my go-to place for industry data and reports on research findings.
I've seen so many good companies close and promising projects canceled that it's hard to get outraged when the biggest company has to cut back. It's been a lousy year for the game industry and, so long as the publishers refuse to take a reasonable...
Yeah, back ups for large projects are crucial and easy in this day and age. Anything I write larger than 2000 words gets emailed to myself - just in case.
