I feel like I'm on a roll with commenting tonight, so I'm going to keep rolling. Frankly, there is no reason for any of the big three to give freelance writer's debug hardware. They do have a limited supply, and what do they get for sending you t...

It really is. What mag is it going to be in so I can watch out for it?

Did you try calling them? I find it odd that they wouldn't get back to you for such a prominent story (congrats on that by the way) but it does help sometimes to call. It's harder to ignore someone talking on the phone then it is to delete an email.

Alas, it's too far away.

Yeah, I've noted that as well. My wife loves that I'm doing something I enjoy and as I haven't found a more permanent job alongside this one as well, when people ask what I do she just says I'm a freelance writer. When they find out I write about...

I've kind of given up on it being a full time thing and am instead trying to find a situation where I can do it alongside another job in order make a decent living.

On this subject of wardrobe. If I were to say, attend E3 or something similar, what should I wear? I mean currently my wardrobe consists of video game, Star Wars, and Batman t-shirts. Can I assume that won't be good enough?

Just sent you my resume and some samples. Look forward to hearing back from you.

A Top 5 and The Schwag Review....

A couple of recent articles.

You’d think that being the hero of your favorite video game universe would be the ultimate in cool things to happen to any avid gamer, right? Well, sometimes being the hero is far less of a good time, and far more of a nightmarish one. Here are five examples of such ill-fated heroes who you wouldn’t want to be:

When Metal Gear Solid 4 came to an end, I’m sure I wasn’t the only gamer ou… Continue

Absolutely frustrated...

I am completely, totally, frustrated with gaming journalism right now.

I have been attempting to reach out to some higher paying placed recently and as of yet none have gotten back to me. I don't what to do. I'm being paid at the majority of the places I work now, but it's still amounting to basically chump change. I am sick and tired of having the only people who get back to me be the ones looking for volunteers. I mean really, what the hell does it take to find someone who will pay you for so… Continue

Bargain Bin: Strategy Edition

Are you armchair general? Do you watch the History Channel hoping to glean some insight from Patton or Napoleon? Do you sit on the beach imagining the way your virtual forces would invade it, looking for tactical weakness while the children play happily amidst the sand and waves? If so, let me know so I sit away from you on the bus. I’m just kidding, a little bit at least. For those of us with a mind to command, video games offer a wide variety of titles and styles to sample and dominate. Whethe… Continue

Video Games Can Heal You

Video Games Can Heal You

A new trend has been emerging in the medical world. Doctors around the world, inspired by the potential of game systems like the Nintendo Wii, have begun to include video games as a part of their treatments, citing them both as an entertaining way for patients to get the exercise they need to recover, and also as a welcome distraction from the often painful conditions many are suffering from. There are limitations to what systems like the Wii can do, though, and oftenti… Continue

Hey Stew,

I remember some time ago you were looking for vintage game collections to write about on TGR. I thought I'd let you know that I actually completed my photo essay assignment for my Photo Journalism class, which is completely devoted to game controllers.

The essay can be found on my Flickr page here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikesuszek/sets/72157617651420453/

The photos are simple pictures of game controllers over the years. The key in my photo essay is my approach in the captions. I simply note what interactive and noteworthy elements are on the controllers, and what it typically "takes" to use them in-game (how we interact with them). Let me know if you plan on using them.

Incidentally, one of my last assignments requires that I pitch my photos to any press site. You don't have to use them for me to get the grade, of course, but I thought of your column right away.

Cheers,

-Mike

I liked your top five epic moments in gaming on TGR. It's a cool idea for a list, but it felt a little limited (I can think of five more right now). Which leads me to the next part: do a part-two. I liked the intro to FFVIII, but what about some of those insane Weapon battles in FFVII? I would also put the Metroid Prime final battles as being pretty epic.

See? A list like this just gets me going on all the sweet experiences I've had as well. Keep it up, good stuff.

Okay, I look forward to hearing from them. Also, I read your idea for the article about video games and what they meant to your life. Are you still doing that? If I were to get hired on, I'd be happy to work with you on that. I think it' a great idea.

Hey Stew. How are you? I saw your post on TGR. I'm sure you are tired of comments about it, but I'm really looking for some writing experience. I go to the University of Tennessee: Knoxville, and I'm a senior in journalism. Is TGR still hiring on writers? I emailed them today, but I thought you might know. Thanks

Hi Stew. I read about the opportunities at TGR on your post, and it led me to find that TGR is also looking for other positions to be filled too. The last site I worked for pretty much fell apart, and I've been really looking forward to getting back into games journalism.

I've got around three years of experience working in the games industry, and closer to 4-5 in journalism as a whole. I was wondering if you could take a quick look at my VGJN profile, and just give me an idea of whether or not I might have a shot at scoring an Associate Editor spot. I can also supply several references from past editors.

:-) Just let me know if you have time to take a glance.

Ah cool. His name came up the other day, so I figured I'd ask. I've been a newspaper reporter in VT for the past five years, but I'm now wrapping that up to do game journalism full-time.

Hey Stew, you go to St. Michaels...do you know Mike Donahue? I believe he's still a journalism professor there. Big guy with a white beard and very friendly. Writes for the Burlington Free Press too.. just curious if he's been one of your teachers. A great guy and reportage vet.
