My review of Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman, What Did I Do To Deserve This? over at GamesRadar is one of my recent favorites. This Escapist feature on the connections between Nerdcore Hip-Hop and video games is also something I'm pretty happy wit...

The long and short answer is: however much a publication is willing to pay for a certain kind of piece. Most fees are dictated by the going rates that various sites and pubs use interternally. If there is a lot of extra work involved or other exte...

Back when I was doing newspaper reporting and working on churning out 7-9 stories that required numerous interviews for each piece, I ran into this a lot. Typically, I'd make multiple attempts to reach people and give them the opportunity to respo...

I agree with Pat, lack of respect is a big issue that goes hand-in-hand with lack of pay.

Indie Queue #2: Meat Boy Gets Supersized @ The Escapist

Second indie gaming column entry @ The Escapist featuring interviews with Edmund McMillen and his co-conspirators working on Super Meat Boy for Wii and PC.

My favorite quote from the piece is below.

"McMillen and his skeleton crew have rolled up their sleeves and are now steadily toiling away to create Super Meat Boy - a game he says will be 'so amazing that you will crap your pants and so awesome that your body will suck the crap back up inside you.' Sure, it's not quite the typical flavor of… Continue

Indie Queue: Cave Story Lives Again @ The Escapist

Here's a column entry I wrote for The Escapist featuring interviews with the original Cave Story creator along with the U.S. team working on the WiiWare update:

"Almost a decade ago, budding Japanese developer Daisuke Amaya (aka Pixel) first set to work on creating a platform adventure game about a young cyborg boy who wakes up with amnesia in a vibrant subterranean world populated by charming, rabbit-like creatures. As he toiled away over the course of five years to complete his first gaming p… Continue

Hi Nathan, I've seen you post several times on this site advocating Cheat Code Central. How did you get involved writing for them?

I've never met the man but I have heard of him. He still teaches and has an office on campus. I believe he was a guest speaker in one of my classes last year.

Thanks. It went through a pretty significant change and the overall idea of it was completely stripped, but overall I think it worked out alright.

Thanks for the tips. I sent in a resume a bit ago and they said they'd keep me on file. I'll make a point of checking up every now and then though and contacting them again as you suggested.

I'm just interested. I've been trying to get into more freelance work. In your experience what kind of pieces is Cheat Code Central more interested in? Do they have any particular preference and are opinion pieces a possibility?
