Kombo News Round-up 4/21/08-4/25/08

Ah, what a great vacation! That’s what I’d be saying if I had a legitimate reason for allowing this blog to languish in a sad, non-updated state for so long. But I don’t. I’ve been busy, yes, but no more than usual. Truth be told, Kombo’s new format has sapped me of any reason to create new content [...]

Kombo News Round-up 4/17/08 (My birthday!)-4/18/08

I haven’t played a single game all week. I bet my mother’s proud; “You’ll never get anywhere playing video games all the time!” she’d exclaim, after telling some kids to get off her lawn and making me take out the trash. Well, except that she never actually said that, and my line of work (if [...]

Kombo News Round-up 4/14/08-4/16/08

Whew, I’ve been busy. I’m a keyboard typin’, psychology project completin’ flying purple people eater exhausted shell of my former self. Thanks to my time spent carving a nice little hole into a colossal mountain of stress, I was unable to fulfill my duty to you, my dear, dear hypothetical reader. But my absentee style of [...]

"…And Protect Your SOLDIER Honor" Part One

Since their inception, video games have been vying to become a legitimate storytelling medium. From Pac-Man’s simple tale of ghost-busting bravado to Dragon Quest’s Japanese spin on D&D swords ‘n’ sorcery, even early games attempted to provide players with compelling plots to back up their sometimes nonsensical gameplay. But if one were to plot out [...]

Kombo News Round-up 4/11/08

As you’ve likely noticed, the eponymous 4/11/08 occurred two days ago, on the eleventh of April. Two days late and two dollars short, I suppose — but it’s not like you’re paying me to do this, so you can understand why my motivation might falter occasionally. So then, lest we squander even more time, here’s [...]

About Me:
I'm a student at Austin College in Sherman, Texas and plan to double-major in English and Psychology.

Currently, I freelance for Kombo, videogaming247, Maximum PC, The Escapist and Hardcore Gamer Magazine. I'm always open to new opportunities, so give me a shout if you're looking for an enthusiastic, opinionated writer with an uncanny Solid Snake impression.

That is, of course, on the off-chance that you trip over this profile before strolling over to the VJN frontpage, where you'll likely post a job listing and wait for the apps to flow right in. Really, filling out this profile is needless time-sink, in that respect.

On top of that, most employee-seekers are looking for fleet-footed go-getters. Advertising yourself in your own profile is more or less the antithesis of that. The whole thing is pointless, really.

So, whatever you do, don't read the above four paragraphs.

How 2008 Will Define the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 Generation

Each generation of consoles has made an advance in gaming unlike any other. For the N64/PS1 generation, it was the jump to 3D; for the Xbox/PS2/GC generation, it was online gameplay and sandbox games. But what about now? Aside from prettier graphics, micro-transactions, and (arguably) motion control, what has defined this generation of consoles? The answer: nothing. Yet. This year, however, that's going to change. 2008 will go down in gaming history as the year of user-created content's rise to… Continue

The All-Con Experience: Chronicles of a Super Nerd.

Note: This blog entry is a personal anecdote. Although it's fairly entertaining in my un-biased opinion, it also contributes nothing to any sort of discussion about gaming or games journalism. With that said, please read it anyway. It'd be much appreciated.

I’m back, and I have stories!

Back from where, you ask? Why, All-Con, of course. Oh wait, I guess I should go into further detail. See, a “Con,” is a convention and–oh, you wanted more details on All-Con? My mistake. All-Con is a con… Continue

Lost Odyssey: Old is the New New (An Analysis of Story in Games: Part One)

How many games have we seen that open with an oily, grimy battle of Lord of the Rings proportions? Don’t strain your brain on this one — just know that the number will soon equal the number of combatants in such battles. The reason for this mass replication should be obvious; giant battle scenes are really freakin’ cool… Continue

Raiden Done Right

Over the past few years, gaming has grown from a mostly-juvenile form of entertainment and escapism to a legitimate medium of artistic expression. Story and characters have evolved tremendously: whether you consider Bioshock’s Andrew Ryan, whose madness is chronicled through tape recordings placed conveniently throughout the failed utopia of Rapture, Half-Life 2’s (yes, Half-Life 2, specifically) Gordon Freeman, who never speaks a word, yet develops a near tangible bond with Alyx Vance, or Porta… Continue
