My blog is really just a personal site that happens to have my portfolio on it also. As for what employers actually look for, I haven't the faintest. In my blog I let my bias towards certain companies be known, I routinely say not so nice things a...

Yeah, there's a point where cheerleading for a piece of hardware begins to look ridiculous, especially if you have pretensions to becoming a pro. I'm not saying that some well-known professionals don't have a fanboi leaning but I can't imagine hir...

I wouldn't dip too deeply into the fanboi pot. You may get yourself some hits and diggs by gushing all over your console of choice and slagging against those you hate, but that kind of bias won't get you far writing professionally. Everyone has th...

Well personally I think a blog is meant to be more personal than anything else. Always, always, always keep things as professional as you can, though. Like it has been said, don't go posting slanderous stuff. But if you've got a bias toward a cert...

What Tim said. A consistent pace of updates and strong quality posts - whether original or just linking to somewhere else interesting - are the hallmarks of a good personal blog. Don't go the straight newsblog route since a) that niche is already...

Not so much speaking out of my own experience here, but it's probably also a good way to show diversity. A lot of people tend to try and cover just the big name games that everyone loves, but part of the process is to go out and play games that lo...

It definitely depends on the outlet, but I'd say activity and writing quality are the most important things. So, yes, I'd say start writing and make contributions and start building yourself a backlog of content that you can point editors to when ...

I've been tossing around the idea of creating my own blog, but I'm not much of a feature guy. I suppose if I did make one it would be more casual. A place, more for me, to express my interests, concerns, and thoughts about the industry. Do employe...

The art of Freelancing and my doubts

So I've been reading up on gaming news, keeping up on my blog, opened a Gamefly account, and I have made great strides in my writing ability over the course of the year; I think it's time to try my luck and begin freelancing. From what I have read, I need to be unrelenting, assiduous even, to get the notice of an editor. Being persistent isn't the issue however, it is coming up with features and my thoughtful selection of what I send in. I guess it runs deeper than that, in that my confidence it… Continue

Game of the year for 2008

After a year of waiting for all the triple A titles to hit the retail shelves and the joy of tearing into the shrinkwrap after you brought them home, the big question remains-- who took the cake? Who completely outdid themselves and went beyond what was expected to bring us, the gamers, a wonderful experience that marks them with the distinguished honor of being recognized for game of the year? Two in particular leapt out in my mind due to their creativity, their quality, their ability to enthra… Continue

LittleBigPlanet review

A year ago I downloaded and witnessed my first trailer of the enigmatic, yet energized LittleBigPlanet. Atrociously cute sackboys were jollying around, creating their own playground that seemed larger than life, unlike themselves, and foretold that Media Molecule had an ace up their sleeve. Indeed, the British development team had to take on a mountainous task of innovative creativity with these tinsy mascots, and of course, a great risk. In a world where sequels can almost guarantee a surplus r… Continue

My impressions of the Resistance 2 public beta

Well, it has to be said, my first impressions of the game were not so good. The chaotic gameplay leaves no room to twiddle your thumbs, nor even to try to get to grips with the game. This is mainly due to the spawning system- it is random, but it usually drops you in the focus point of the battle and it can be unforgiving if you don't know your way around. It wasn't at all uncommon to spawn and there would be an enemy behind or infront of me. Dying a few seconds after coming into play fed the wh… Continue

Well, I've already pre-ordered my copy of Little Big Planet and secured for myself a nice Kratos sackboy outfit.

Needless to say I'm excited; this is a game that seems like is being made just for me. I've always appreciated games which included an editor, from Age of Empires, t… Continue

Hey Matt,

Just read your post on the main board. Shoot me an email sometime, and I think we'd have plenty to talk about. A couple of years ago I was in a very similar position, and maybe I can help with some friendly advice or learned counsel. agroe0 {{{at}}} gmail {{dot}} com

My name is Switch. Pay strict attention to what I say because I choose my words carefully and I never repeat myself. I've told you my name: that's the Who. The Where could most readily be described as a prison cell. But there's a vast difference between being stuck in a tiny cell and being in prison. The What is easy: recently I planned and set in motion events to execute the perfect bank robbery. That's also the When. As for the Why: beyond the obvious financial motivation, it's exceedingly simple... because I can. Which leaves us only with the How; and therein, as the Bard would tell us, lies the rub.

Where do you get the balls to ask me a question like that after what happened last time?
