Hey I was paging through the newest issue of WIRED and saw them post a mini-blurb of your review on Dangerous High School Girls!

Good job getting some more indie-style games into a magazine. :)

aha. Okay, strike the "elaboration" request. Further thought (like, one more second of thought at your prompting) made me quite aware as to why that's too personal a request.

Working from a more abstract context then, I still ask, *Isn't* sexually best when it's dignified? You said you were careful to suggest such a thing, but is that you're afraid of making a definitive statement, or because you think it's untrue? It's a big question to consider, particularly for those of us who love our media (games, film, etc).

Still loving your work. :)

Looks like your shouting into a vacuum wasn't all for naught, as Kotaku picked up on the story and you were able to use it for GameSetWatch. I'd say that's not too bad for something you never thought would get many views.

It's cool knowing that I saw it first though. :)

Leigh, I read your recent blog entry re: Gloria of DMC4 and how sci-fi sex doesn't work. EXCELLENT. So excellent that I decided to leave a comment. And talk to you more.

To answer your question, as to how one puts nude characters into a game without cheapening it ... probably the same way(s) it's done in film. Which, of course, means the game would probably require some emphasis on plot.

I also wanted to ask you for more detail about this statement: "I want to be careful in stating that sexuality is best when it's dignified -- there are, of course, all sorts of indignities that can be titillating." More elaboration plz? Isn't sexuality best when it's dignified?

Props on your 'We Always Play Videogames' piece. Reminded me of a story I tell everyone who askes me about Nintendo Wii. That Thanksgiving after the launch I brought it home and had everyone in the house playing, old and new. My highly competitive uncles whom loved the boxing eventually started gambling on the matches. Meanwhile my grandmother bowled a 242 her second time at bowling, bringing her back to when she used to play in a league with her recently deceased husband. Felt really awesome to help her bring back those good memories.

Really wish I had the foresight to write about that Thanksgiving get together after it happened.

I don't know how I missed it the first time around, but I just read your piece on the Dracula X Chronicles and had to say that I have to say that you're far from alone. We're far too spoiled nowadays with our straightforward videogames with maps and bountiful powerups, and I don't quite know what to do about it. I'm not sure if part of it has to do with my lack of time to memorize dungeon layouts and monster attacks (or if I simply do not have those mad skills that I once posessed), but old games seem far more difficult that I remember them being.

Great stuff.

I think I'm going to start wearing one of those fedoras with a notecard in the side that has "PRESS" written across it in Sharpie. My bandana fucking rocks, but people just think I'm a roadie for Megadeth instead of the SERIOUS JOURNALIST that I actually am.

Also, I'm going to start stealing from children.

About Me:
Currently freelance, I write for Gamasutra and am editor of WorldsInMotion.biz, which means I'm content chair for the two-day, online worlds-focused Worlds in Motion Summit at GDC. I do a weekly column at GameSetWatch, The Aberrant Gamer, which deals with social, psychological and sexual issues in games. I review regularly for http://www.destructoid.com/elephant/index.phtml?a=9675">Destructoid and Paste, and contribute semi-regularly to The Escapist. I also keep a blog, Sexy Videogameland, which means I don't have any time to actually play video games.

I don't freelance for other industry sites outside Gamasutra, but I'm always interested in consumer work. Specifically, I'm looking right now to do some more reviews -- don't bug me if you can't pay me something, though.

I also realize I have a pet peeve about people using their freaking Second Life avatar as their profile portrait. Since coming to this realization, I have ceased to accept friend requests from people with Second Life avatar portraits in place of sensible ones. Sorry, s'just how I roll.

Also, I'm a jerk.

Shouting Into a Vacuum

I spend way too much time, and way too many words, on my blog posts sometimes, so I thought I'd try pointing out a couple of my "favorite" new pieces here to share with my peers -- because I'm sure many of you can relate to the occasional, distinct sensation that some of the things you concentrate your effort on the most intently are precisely those pieces that slip through the cracks.

I recently wasted spent a lot of my free time presenting the issue of cross-media co… Continue
