Latest article: Fracture Review

I'm an English student with a sense of irony and a fancy for the things called "video games".

I'd like to break into this biz (the VGJ biz, that is) after I finish my BA next year. I wouldn't whine if I landed a job earlier, however. I'll be volunteer reviewing and chasing freelance opportunities until the biz breaking happens.

Take a peek at my blog below to see where I'm coming from.

New Study: Poorly Designed Point-and-Click Adventure Games Cause Aggression

Okay, so there's no real scientific study linking aggression to adventure games. There should be. At times I get the gnawing suspicion that, if ever interactive entertainment leads me to commit some heinous, horrible crime, the game to blame won't be GTA. It would more likely be an adventure game with badly designed puzzles.

I'm not talking about the kind of puzzles that make you want to kick yourself after you discover the solution. I'm referring to the type that make you want to kick someone… Continue

Everybody's Doing It

If Audiosurf was a drug, it would probably be illegal.

Those of you who haven't played Dylan Fitterer's unusual indie title before, be warned: while the strange blend of music, arcade puzzle, and driving seems like nothing more than an amusing diversion today, it could very well be tomorrow's compulsion. I should know. I've been playing it steadily since it was released back in February, and yet I still somehow felt compelled to play for several hours more yesterday. Why so addictive? Speaking… Continue

Hey, Erick. I noticed that you were talking about writing a senior paper on gaming. My thesis (anthro major, yay) was on virtual communities in online games, so if you need any help feel free to ask.

Also, don't discount theories and books by scholars which aren't specifically about games. For example, Manuel Castells has multiple books on online personas and virtual communities/world building which are very applicable to gaming. Hell, even older people like Weber have theories which can apply to gaming.

I am indeed. Thanks for your comments. I thought it might be a little academic sounding but i wanted to challenge the 'videogamers lack any kind of wothwhile intelligence' theory that a few people sadly still seem to have.

Good luck with your VG journalism endevours by the way. I am in the same boat as you so know exactly where you're coming from!

Hey Eric -

I wish I could come here offering you a job in the biz, but I can offer you some more writing opportunities at my site http://www.playitreviewit.com. I'm looking for more people to write reviews, and contribute to the sites growth. The site is all about gamers writing reviews for other gamers, and I thought you might be interested in writing and honing your skills. I'd love to see some of your content, and hey, practice makes perfect, right?

Really hope you decide to contribute

- Andrew
