Gamespite (Jeremy Parish of 1Up's personal site) is also excellent - and Edge is the absolute best print publication in the business - though it's mighty expensive to get a subscription in the US. The Escapist is consistently excellent as well. F...

Thanks for all the nice things you said about GameCyte, folks. It means a lot to me to hear that my peers and betters liked what we did there. I have to agree with Andrew; this shakeup will mean that a lot of folks who we'd otherwise be competing...

That actually really helped ease my mind, Brendon. Sorry to hear about GameCyte, hope you can get that next big gig. I have trouble freelancing. For some reason, I feel like my writing experience isn't enough to get paid yet. I'm just not sure if...

Dammit Jared! How do you do that? I want your BRAIN. True story: I found a former co-worker on Craigslist, listed as an "escort."

That's terrible to here. Sean (gamecyte) is a buddy of mine from way back in High School - he's the one that motivated me to start writing again. I don't have a plan B, but I work on a freelance/Volunteer basis right now. I suppose I don't have m...

Well, the first podcast is ready to go and now I just need to get all the other content together that's supposed to go with it. It's supposed to be up by next weekend, but I might extend it a week at the latest just to make sure all my ducks are in a row.

I'm sure you already know that once you start publishing weekly, there is precious little time for duck-row adjusting.

The only other thing is I'm entirely on my own, so once we score a little advertising and sponsorship, I'm sure DK will only get better. Easier said than done, though, right?

I've decided that what I like most about Casual Core is your writing voice, and I've also decided that your profile page is very pink.

That is all.

That's a great topic. I wrote a similar paper for my senior thesis on the appropriation of cinematic devices in gaming and how the games-as-film/films-as-game debate is complicated by the interactivity inherent in gameplay. If you're looking for resources or advice, I'd be happy to share what I've got.

Had to move back to my roots. I had been out there for 6 years.

I find that song, and especially that part in the film brings a slight watering to my eyes every time. Maybe part of it is that, in some sick way, I understand Jamie Gumm.

Casual Core

Welcome to casual core, a new monthly series on the games and culture of the weekend warrior. Scoff at the casual gamer stereotypes, yet you can’t devote 24 hours a day to grinding your character to godlike levels? You have war stories of your own but can’t find the time to master every FPS to spawn an Internet meme? You’ve come to the right place, friend.

Lame game movie nights - Doom and House of the Dead

More bad game movies, psuedo-film geek reviewing and schlocky horror ensues...

It’s time for yet another edition of lame game movie nights, wherein our intrepid columnist takes in a double feature of videogame films and lives to tell the experience. This time, we’re diving right in to a sub genre of a sub genre – the horror videogame movie.

Since the games that these films are based on are much more terrifying than their film counterparts, we were in for a real “treat” this week when we surviv… Continue

Writing for movie-based games

In previous columns, we’ve deliberated the nature of storytelling within games and movies and complained about the quality of writing in many movies based on games. This week, we’re looking into the other side of the equation – writing a movie-based game, with a little inspiration from a very insightful Gamasutra interview posted last week.

In the interview, screenwriter Dalan Musson (writer for The Golden Compass game) described the process of writing a movie-based game, from dealing with mov… Continue

screenwriting vs. game writing

So, games and films are undeniably vastly different media, but they're increasingly being treated as convergent forms. I wanted to explore the nature of writing and storytelling between the two... please check out the column and let me know if I've been successful in that regard:

Goldeneye 007... a Retrospective

In honor of the recently deceased (though some still have hope) Xbox Live Arcade port of the classic Nintendo 64 shooter, last week's column took a look back at one of the greatest movie-to-game adaptations ever made: Goldeneye 007.

In 1995, MGM announced that Pierce Brosnan would be the next actor to fill the shoes of James Bond, the debonair super spy made famous in films that often rode the line between serious action and goofy antics (see: whacked out gadgets, nigh-insane character names).… Continue
