A little late here, but as already stated, a lot of it has to do with voice and content. The Escapist may have grown a lot in terms of audience when they got Zero Punctuation, but they continue to expand their content with video features and offer...

My buddy and I started up a hockey site, where we comment and analyze happenings in a wide variety of hockey leagues. My ultimate goal with the site is to create an awesome hockey community, it's just a matter of getting people to the site, regis...

I've got some more budget to work with, so I'm back to looking for feature/editorial submissions for next month. (June.) I'm also going to make it a lot easier this time. Rather than do the whole cover letter, resume, references, etc. thing like s...

Eh, you loved Lair? If more people would have liked it I'm sure Factor 5 would've still been in business.

I am actually the Deputy Editor for Leadership magazine here in South Africa. It's a business and entrepeneurship type rag. It's definitely 180 from writing about videogames. I get to to meet a bunch of local celebs, no one you guys would know. I ...

What does it matter? I do use and have used my real name. I use this name for a reason. I have problems with a certain individual online who follows me everywhere. I don't even LIKE to use my real name since that started.

I'll start using it, just for you. =/

Hey Brendon,

Good to hear from another games scholar. I can totally concur with your observation that some of the most applicable material isn't specifically about games. While I've been researching narrative in games I've run across some amazingly relevant material in literary theory and hypertext theory.

Good luck in your studies. If you're ever dealing with video game narrative in your projects, feel free to give me a shout and I can recommend some reading.

Haha. My friend is going to USC and I'm going up there next week to visit him and some fam. He says he rather likes it up there, which is surprising as he's not much of a city dweller at all. I can't say I blame you though. LA doesn't look like a very fun place to live.

About Me:
For several years, I was the editor in charge of GamerNode.com. Now, I share co-ownership of the site with Eddie Inzauto.

Outside of wasting -- enjoying -- my time with GN, I've contributed to several online and print publications as a freelance reviewer, and at one point I spent a few years as the Gaming Editor of No Cover Magazine.

Currently, I'm the Chief Editor of the MMO Life Network, and in charge of overseeing the content on a number of MMO-related portals, working with PR, setting up community events like contests, etc. Anyone interested in writing features about MMOs -- or trying their hand at MMO-related news -- feel free to send me a message.

(Outside of gaming, I've worked as a sports journalist both in print and on radio, and I also work as a DVD/Blu-ray/movie reviewer.)

Yay for me making a movie blog! (If you're not a Communist you should check it out)

I got bored the other day, so I decided to finally back up all my talk and make my own movie blog. It's 100% me (except for the original template I modified). It's sort of fun to have a project where I have no one to answer to or worry about. No need to clear ideas for new stuff with management, no worrying about something I'm saying damaging the reputation of friends, etc.

It's only been up for a day and a half, but it's already getting a few hundred visitors somehow. Maybe it's becau… Continue

Oh, advertisers...

I've said in the past that I thought the best way for gaming sites to sell ads and remain fully credible in readers' eyes was to use a separate company for the ad sales and just give them the 10% or so they'd want for selling the adspace. I still stand by that, even though our ad company (which is far more prestigious than my site) just gave me a pretty entertaining call.

Basically, it's been a case of "What are you guys doing that we could sell to an advertiser in the next month?" wit… Continue

Here goes nothing...

This looked like a great way to get involved with more people in the biz. (That's what the cool kids always called it, at least.)

Living in Portland, OR, I've always felt as if most of the people I should be talking with or getting to know live states away. In most cases, it's true. Then I remembered, "Brendon, this is the INTERNET!" so voila, here I am.

My only goal? Meet new people. Network some. Have interesting conversations. Allow people to laugh at me working fulltime for no pay… Continue
