I'm a little curious as to how many of the members here are full-time games journalists. I ask because, at least with a lot online gaming publications, I know contributers are often paid part-time wages (as I am), or they're entirely volunteer (which I've been on a number of sites over the years).
I guess I'm just asking this because I've always wondered how many people actually make a living doing gaming journalism.
During busy months, I get enough work that games writing becomes my full time job. During lean months, I pray a lot.
I do a little work outside the house, though, as a dog groomer two mornings a week. I get bored with working from home all the time so I like the change in scenery (like teeth flashing at my face--just kidding. Dogs are awesome).
(Sometimes I venture outside of games and do a little copywriting and/or writing for animal publications.)
Part-time for a few sites. I've also got a full-time position in marketing/advertising for a big company and another part-time job in an unrelated field. It's hard to manage all that and still have time for a life, but I need to write ...
I'm a full-time blogger (and I suppose editor counts... I am big with the editing), but I know a lot of people don't consider that a true journalistic role. Of course, I have a sugar daddy husband, so my needs aren't as great as some on the monetary front (and I am oh-so-lucky there), but it's nice that it allows me to attend school full-time as well. Living in a smaller city helps as well; the cost of living isn't as high. If we lived on one of the coasts? I'm sure I'd have to have something else going on the side. So, me! I am! Let me raise my hand. It's such a wonderful thing, too. I am, however, quite interested in looking into expanding on that after I finish school... if I ever manage to, with impending baby.
