Videogames Journos Network

Because the world badly needs another social network

Brendon Lindsey

Do you do any non-gaming journalism/writing?

Obviously this is the VJN, but I thought it'd be neat to see what (if anything) other people here do with their writing.

Outside of writing about games, I do most of my freelance stuff (and all of the paying stuff atm) with sports, movies, books, or just general things that usually fall under humor/entertainment. I'm in the process of starting up my own movie and anime sites on top of GamerNode, so I'll probably focus on those three in the near future.

Of course, without sports journalism I wouldn't be getting regular paychecks, so I suppose in a way the gaming stuff is secondary to that. I'd say 90% of it is on the radio, though; I only write scores and the occasional freelance piece about X athlete for a few sources.

Actually I do. I write and shoot for a military-themed newspaper by day. Writing about video games is what I do in the evenings or weekends between playing my games.

Really? Which newspaper?

Sorry it took a while. The Fort Bragg Paraglide Newspaper.

I do more anime and manga work than gaming only because there are a lot more releases to be reviewed during most weeks.

By sheer accident, I've started writing tech articles for Alaska Airlines in-flight magazine. The last one was on distributed computing, the current one is on cell phones.

My other work is at Japanator.com, doing anime/manga news. I'd like to expand into movie and tech related stuff, but I haven't settled down and started searching for work in those areas. Adam, where do you do anime news?

I write at Advanced Anime, who is part of the Advanced Media Network family. I don't necessarily write too many news articles (although I have been encouraged to do so) only because my main position there is writing reviews and that really fills my time. Oh btw, I love Japanator ;)

In addition to writing for my school's newspaper, I work for a freelance writing firm "ABContent", which gives me a bit of everything to work on, some relating to journalism and some not.

Right now I'm not actively writing for things outside of gaming. I do, on occassion, write television news/reviews...I'm expecting to be asked to review Battlestar Galactica when the new season premieres. I'll also be doing some movie reviews for the first time ever at Sundance.

The only other thing that I'd be interested in pursuing as much as gaming would be tech. I've written a lot of tech news and reviews...enjoying it for the most part too.

That's all cool. I would like to focus on gaming and tech, but when you have cay payments to make you'll take any work you can get. :p

So true. And today is the day our office is supposed to get it's "last day" notice before closing. So the standing offer to write horrible celeb news might look more appealing when I realize we only have under $1k to save each month.

I've turned those jobs down numerous times, because I hate celebs and the tabloid shit...but when you have to make that car payment, all bets are off.
