Videogames Journos Network

Because the world badly needs another social network

Brendon Lindsey

Do you do any non-gaming journalism/writing?

Obviously this is the VJN, but I thought it'd be neat to see what (if anything) other people here do with their writing.

Outside of writing about games, I do most of my freelance stuff (and all of the paying stuff atm) with sports, movies, books, or just general things that usually fall under humor/entertainment. I'm in the process of starting up my own movie and anime sites on top of GamerNode, so I'll probably focus on those three in the near future.

Of course, without sports journalism I wouldn't be getting regular paychecks, so I suppose in a way the gaming stuff is secondary to that. I'd say 90% of it is on the radio, though; I only write scores and the occasional freelance piece about X athlete for a few sources.

I actually review comic books at ComicsBulletin.com. It's a great way to waste weekly money... but I will say that reviewing things so often keeps my writing relatively fresh.

Heh. Looking over this thread, I realized how much has changed since I replied.

I've basically become a full-time freelance tech blogger/journalist, with gaming coverage that typically falls more into the business/distribution/big picture category. I've always been interested in technology and gadgets, but would never have imagined myself in this position a year ago when I first responded here. It's just the way the cards fell as I started freelancing for a living.

Along with this, I do write about the cultural/artistic side of games on occasion. Writing creatively along these lines is a nice change of pace, but it's also an easy transition.

I'm a full time music writer/editor. Eventually I'd like to make a living just freelancing — video games, tech, music, food, travel, or anything along these lines. But I'll probably be in a cubicle for a lot longer.

I do tech and games coverage for my local daily, but I'm trying to break into other sections of the paper. I mainly write features because those pay the most. My print outlet has undergone major changes in order to maintain daily publication and the only way I can get a big feature greenlit is if it has a money saving angle somewhere in it, like my "Cutting the Cord" piece that ran last week.

I blog, for free, for the website that hosts many of the Michigan daily newspapers becuase they have killer Google rankings, which is where all of my cellphone and gadget reviews go. My print outlet won't run a weekly tech/game review column so I do it online.

I have got a (relatively) large family and so do the "family news" once a year at Christmas, does that count? And why have I admitted it?

Because you're very silly and everyone here, as long as they know you, will never forget it or let you forget it!

No no that's cool, my mum does a yearly letter and considering she types with one finger it would probably be therepautic to watch someone competent do it.

I can't remember if I've replied to this already. I've done bits of travel writing and walkthrough writing in the past, and I kept up my daily journal at www.travelsofjack.com for a few months when I was away (I add random shizz every now and then). Otherwise my personal specialty is in invites. Yeah, every few months, for my birthday or if there's some silly event on (eg. Medieval Fayre) or simply out of the kindness of my heart, I throw a big get together at my place in the hills for all my friends. They are a weekend of dancing and boozing and goats and whatever and fun, but I think most people look forward to my invites most of all, which are basically just two to four pages of funny shizz I happen to think up.

Wow, that's a lot of shizz!

Well things ended up changing for me. At the moment other than video game journalism (at two different sites), I'm working on writing up different campaigns for Dark Heresy to see if Fantasy Flight games would be willing to publish them and writing up stories and books.

I do. I just finished my time with the college newspaper as news editor and this semester I've interned with the New York Daily News.

Crazy times.

I am actually the Deputy Editor for Leadership magazine here in South Africa. It's a business and entrepeneurship type rag. It's definitely 180 from writing about videogames. I get to to meet a bunch of local celebs, no one you guys would know. I did get to interview Archbishop Desmond Tutu though.

It's a great job, but not what i really wanna do, which is obviously to write about videogames. :)

My buddy and I started up a hockey site, where we comment and analyze happenings in a wide variety of hockey leagues.

My ultimate goal with the site is to create an awesome hockey community, it's just a matter of getting people to the site, registered and immersed.

I write about music sometimes, over at The Line of Best Fit.
